WOODLAND ROAD FRONT GARDEN

Freeing up a new view

Playfully, colourfully unlocking the potential

THE DESIGN

Overshadowed by privet, constrained by a concrete path and crumbling retaining wall, the brief was to realise the potential of this garden and unlock a new view from the house.

Fragrance, colour and a soft wild feel were also key here. Centring the gate, bringing people into the heart of the garden, I opened up a new view from large bay windows.

The path’s structure allowed creative planting on either side of it, enhancing the walk to the front door.

Tactile and fragrant plants lined the path that playfully snaked through the garden, all leading to a welcoming threshold for family and visitors.

PLANTING

Japanese quince hedge with tall grasses and softer herbaceous path planting.

Wood anemone and winter and spring bulb underplanting underneath trees.

Silver and purple leafed plants with fragrant leaves and colourful bee-friendly flowers.

Evergreens to maintain form in winter, along with bulbs for colour in colder months.

Grasses to give movement and height, and herbaceous, evergreen, soft and spiky planting groups.

STRUCTURES

Threshold feature stone in cobbles with added handprints.

Retaining wall rebuilt and railing reinstated to enclose the garden.

Path to house in sandstone with inset feature step-stone and river cobble detail, to link direct and indirect routes across the garden.

Low wall repaired and rebuilt and continued up to boundary.
