Convent Hill Back Garden

The best of both worlds

Creating a modern miracle space

THE DESIGN

The aim was to create a contemporary, elegant garden perfect for a young family. Timeless relaxation and entertainment, plus an inside-outside connection with the home’s interior were key to this brief.

My design incorporated a terrace with informal seating for casual relaxing and meadow lawns, leading down to a pergola with bench seating around fire bowl.

Rusted elements accentuated the modern grey scheme around the garden, linking the house’s outdoors with its indoors.

PLANTING

Herbs, summer bulbs and jasmine were the mainstay. Planters were filled with bamboo, some sacred bamboo specimens.

Specimen trees, chosen for their modest height when mature, for effective screening, spring blossom, fruit and autumn colour. Bulbs planted at their base.

Tall evergreens and a wildflower meadow lawn completed the planting.

STRUCTURES

Ecodeck recycled decking terrace with wide steps that led down to a stepping stone path through the garden.

Oak arches over a wide rolled gravel path that curved around the lawn, leading to an oak pergola with slatted red cedar screen.

Slatted Coniston grey wooden screening and a decorative metal screen that linked with Corten planters and pots.
